Judith Emery, founder and head instructor of Winchester School of Martial Arts®, seamlessly blends over three decades of professional martial arts expertise with invaluable real-world application. Her journey is distinguished by significant achievements across multiple disciplines:
Judith’s martial arts career began in ITF Taekwon-Do, where a fierce competitive streak saw her secure numerous gold medals in individual and team tournaments. The pursuit of effective, practical self-defence led her to Ju Jitsu—a path solidified after successfully apprehending a burglar in her home. She later tested and refined these skills professionally while working in frontline security.
For the past 12 years, Judith has dedicated herself to BJJ, earning her Black Belt under Alex DeSouza. As a top-tier competitor, she consistently reaches the podium at major events, including winning Gold at the prestigious IBJJF Euro Masters and Silver at the IBJJF Master Worlds.
Combining her practical expertise with a natural talent for instruction, Judith transitioned from her established career as a secondary school teacher to pursue her passion full-time. She founded Winchester School Of Martial Arts® to provide structured, high-quality training that is both effective and accessible to all students.

The History of WSMA
The Winchester School of Martial Arts® (WSMA) evolved from the long-running Tenki Ryu martial arts club, which established roots in Winchester during the 1980s and 1990s.
My own journey with the school began in the early 2000s, when I started training and later assisting with classes as part of the club’s growing community.
By 2010, I had moved into a formal instructional role, and in 2013 I became a Director and Shareholder, taking responsibility for the school’s leadership and future development. In 2016, I became the sole owner and formally established The Winchester School of Martial Arts® (WSMA) as the school’s long-term identity, securing Registered UK Trademark protection for the brand.
Today, WSMA continues to provide structured martial arts training for children, teens and families in Winchester, with a strong focus on confidence, discipline, resilience and genuine skill development in a supportive environment.
Over the years, the school and its students have received recognition through the Winchester District Sports Awards, reflecting both competitive success and positive contributions within the local community.
Many of the families who train with me today have been connected to the club for generations - something I am incredibly proud of and deeply grateful for.
