About WSMA

Winchester Martial Arts Classes Built on Over 15 Years of Teaching

Led by Winchester’s first female Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belt, Judith Emery.

Professional Ju Jitsu and martial arts training for children, teens and families in a supportive, structured environment.

Founded by Judith Emery, the school has become a trusted part of the local community - helping students build confidence, discipline and genuine self-defence skills through structured martial arts training.

At Winchester School of Martial Arts®, the focus is simple:

each student’s only competition is who they were yesterday.

While the school’s foundation is traditional Ju Jitsu, students also have opportunities to explore Brazilian Jiu Jitsu through dedicated BJJ classes for children and teens.

Whether training for fitness, confidence or self-defence, every student progresses at their own pace in a positive and encouraging environment.

Judith has over 30 years of martial arts experience, holding:

● 3rd Dan in Ju Jitsu

● Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

● 1st Dan in Taekwon-Do

Her training is not only technical, but practical. Judith first began studying Ju Jitsu after apprehending a burglar in her home, and later worked in frontline security where her skills were tested in real-world situations.

A former secondary school teacher with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), Judith has taught martial arts in Winchester for many years and now teaches all classes personally - bringing a structured, supportive approach to every student, from complete beginners through to advanced practitioners.

While the school’s primary focus is personal development, confidence and long-term progress, opportunities are also available for students who wish to compete.

For students interested in competition and grappling-focused training, the school also offers a dedicated Brazilian Jiu Jitsu programme for children and teens, which has achieved strong success at both local and national level.

Judith continues to train regularly to a high standard, maintaining close ties with her instructor Alex DeSouza and training at DeSouza Dojo in Bournemouth.

The school was also the first in Winchester to introduce dedicated family martial arts classes, allowing parents and children to train together. Due to high demand, most family classes are now fully booked.

WSMA offers:

● Classes for children, teens, adults and families

● A welcoming and inclusive training environment

● Structured progression with expert coaching

● Beginner-friendly classes focused on confidence, discipline and real skills

Training At Sparsholt Sports Centre

Martial Arts Classes take place at Sparsholt College Sports Centre. There is ample parking on site - students are asked to park in the College car park named Sainsbury. The way to the Sports Centre is signposted.

My Philosophy

Winchester School Of Martial Arts is a safe place for all to learn in a positive, friendly and encouraging environment. A place where everyone can improve their skills and fitness at their own pace.

Every student is encouraged to reach their own potential rather than compete against other students. A student of WSMA learns more than a martial art/Jiu Jitsu - they learn skills that will enable them to be a more positive & successful individual in life.

As a student of  WSMA you will learn the traditional values of the Martial Arts, such as self-discipline, respect & compassion as you learn practical Self-defence skills.

Not sure how to choose the right martial arts school? Read why I believe the instructor matters more than the style.

Training In Martial Arts Is A Great Way To Relieve Stress

Training jiu jitsu at Winchester School Of Martial Arts® is a great way to build confidence, self-defence and to release stress in a fun and safe environment.

Self Defence

Ju Jitsu/ jiu jitsu is the best martial art for self-defence.  Students learn to defend against strikes and what to do when the fight goes to the ground. It’s also the best for an all round body work out - training Martial Arts is far more fun than going to the gym!

Beginners Welcome

You haven’t got to be fit, flexible, strong or have prior Martial Arts experience to start. You will be looked after as you learn some great new skills. Ju Jitsu/ jiu jitsu is a fantastic way to get fit & brilliant for mental well being, as well as learning effective self-defence.

Kids BJJ Classes

Building Good Friendships

Students at Winchester School of Martial Arts® get to make some great friends. They meet like minded people with the same or similar goals.

Competitions

Competition - it’s true, it is hard. We all get nervous, but this experience; overcoming the nerves, stepping onto the mats, having the support of your team no matter the outcome- it builds so much confidence making BJJ (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu) a great Martial Art to build confidence.

Not Just For Boys - Girls Can Do BJJ Too

BJJ (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu) is a great sport for girls to take up. It is a martial art that focuses on throws and groundwork with the emphasis on technique rather than strength, offering a valid self-defence that actually works. It's also a fun workout!
